- Under the supervision of the Chief of Section (SAS) and the project officer, the Consultant will undertake the following tasks:

1. Develop training materials on the following aspects:

a. Procedures to install, manually operate and maintain Pandora instrument

b. Methods of observing amount of aerosols and/or trace gases using Pandora instruments (i.e. direct-sunlight and multi
- axis differential optical absorption spectroscopy methods)

d. Process and analyze remote sensing data produced by Pandora from leveraging python or open source tools (column to surface concentration)

2. Organise capacity building training programmes to use Pandora data for air pollution monitoring;

3. Collaborate with internal and external project partners for thematic air pollution research studies and evaluations using remote sensing data including Pandora data.

4. Facilitate other works assigned by the supervisor in the Section and/or Division.

**Responsibilities**:


Space Application Section (SAS) of the Information and Communications Technology and Disaster Risk Reduction Division (IDD) is implementing the Asia-Pacific Plan of Action on Space Applications for Sustainable Development (2018-2030), which was formulated by ESCAP member States in 2018.

In February 2020, the Geostationary Environment Monitoring Spectrometer (GEMS) was launched by the Republic of Korea. It is the first of the three-satellite constellation which enables the hourly monitoring of air pollution levels for almost 20 countries in Asia. This marks a significant leap forward in the ability of scientists to monitor air pollution from space. In this regard, the Space Applications Section (SAS) of the Information and Communications Technology and Disaster Risk Reduction Division (IDD) is implementing the Building the Pan-Asia Partnership for Geospatial Air Pollution information (PANGAPI) project in collaboration with partners and support of the Republic of Korea to accelerate the utilization of the GEMS. The project objective is to enhance the capacity of government agencies in target countries to strengthen national level air pollution monitoring and management.

The capacity building training programmes are aimed at providing:

2) training materials on installation and operation of Pandora and use of remote sensing data for air quality modelling and forecasting

3) regional community of experts for Pandora and remote sensing information for air pollution monitoring.

The capacity building training programmes will help the member States and regional policymakers to:

install and operate the Pandora instruments for air pollution monitoring
- process remote sensing air pollution data including Pandora data
- Qualifications/special skills
- Academic Qualifications: Post-graduate level qualifications in areas such as atmospheric science, physics, geospatial information, data analysis, remote sensing or equivalent.
Minimum 2 years experience in air pollution research using satellite derived data
- Proficiency with software programming languages (i.e. Python and R) and open-source software packages on geospatial information and atmospheric modeling.
- Previous experience in developing and conducting technical training programmes is desired
- Languages
- Language: Fluency in oral and written English. Fluency in other Asian languages is desired.
