**Head of Year at St Andrews High School**

The Head of Year is responsible for a holistic overview of the students in their Year Group, working closely with the Assistant Head of Student Welfare and Progress (SWAP), the Tutors and the students in the Year Group to:

- Act as a role model for students and staff for positive relationships, professionalism and respect.
- Be a proactive presence around the school, at breaks and lunchtimes, visiting the Year Group during Registration and in their lessons and attending school events.
- Promote positive attitudes to learning and exceptional behaviour throughout the Year Group.
- Use the “What makes a great STA Community” document to assist with students' attitudes and expectations.
- Monitor the progress and welfare of the students in the Year Group, organising interventions as required.
- Follow up any student incidents as they arise.
- Liaise with the School Counselors and SEN/ED department.
- Work with Tutors to monitor the attendance and punctuality of students in the Year Group.
- Ensure effective communication to, and positive relationships with parents.
- Organise Student Reflections on Grade Reports and Parent/Student/Teacher Meetings.
- Continue to develop the Year Group's Wellbeing programme.
- Plan and run Year Group assemblies/events/activities.
- Lead, support and empower the Year's Tutor team, including planning and running Year Team meetings.
- Plan and lead the Year Group's Residential(s).
- Follow and deliver all school policies.
- Discuss any Safeguarding concerns with the STA safeguarding lead.

At St Andrews, we believe that the main quality of a great Head of Year is having excellent relationships with both the students in a Year Group and their parents. This means that we prioritise Heads of Year moving through the High School with their Year Group. Heads of Year must therefore be comfortable working with students across the full age range of the High School.

No teacher will be appointed without at least two references, including one from the most recent employer, a ten year criminal record check and relevant regional Prohibition Order/DBS checks.
