Internship: Hydrological Modelling

SEI Asia’s work focuses on gender and social equity, climate adaptation, disaster risk reduction, water insecurity and integrated water resources management, transitional agriculture, renewable energy and urbanization.**Role**:
This internship opportunity allows students or recent graduates to receive hands-on experience with SEI Asia’s multidisciplinary Water Cluster. The intern will work on the project “Transboundary Rivers of South Asia Phase-2 (TROSA2): Rivers, Rights and Resilience (T2:3R)”. The intern’s work will focus on developing a Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT) for Meghna for climate change impact assessment on different sectors. This opportunity will provide the intern with on-the-job training as well as the ability to learn by doing. This work at SEI will further develop the intern’s ability to bridge science and policy.

**Key duties and responsibilities include**:
Under supervision of SEI researchers, the intern will assist in the following:

- **Research and literature review**:

- Understand the context of the Meghna River basin.
- Examine issues around changing climate and its impact on peoples’ livelihoods and the river basin’s ecosystems.
- **Data collection for the Meghna River basin**:

- Collect in-situ meteorological and hydrological data from relevant agencies.
- Collect climate change information under the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project Phase 6 (CMIP6) framework.
- Collect agriculture and management information using citizen science.
- **Support development of a river basin modelling tool**:

- Assist in developing an appropriate modelling framework for SWAT in the Meghna River basin.
- Validate the results using in-situ and citizen science.
- **Data analysis and interpretation**:

- Compile results into reports and visual outputs, such as maps and graphs.
- If possible, produce a poster for policy makers on the results, using a platform like the Meghna Knowledge Forum.
- **General project support**:

- Provide support in drafting project reports and for project management activities.

**Deliverables**:

- Data collection using in-situ observations and citizen science.
- A SWAT hydrological model for the Meghna River basin.
- Data analysis and results, summarized as figures and graphs.
- Contribute to develop an atlas of climate change vulnerability maps in Meghna River Basin.
- Co-author a report and possibly a manuscript for submission to a high-impact peer-reviewed international journal.

**Who you are**:
We are looking for someone who is passionate, eager to learn, and comfortable working with a diverse team of researchers.

**Formal qualifications and skills**:

- Enrolled in a Bachelor’s or Master’s program in environmental science, geoinformatics, water resources engineering or natural sciences, with an interest in GIS and river basin modelling.
- Strong enthusiasm for research and a proactive approach to learning new skills and concepts.
- Excellent analytical and problem-solving abilities.
- Strong proficiency in spoken and written English.
- Ability to work collaboratively in a multicultural environment.

**Additional information**:

- This is a paid internship position.
