The mandate of the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP) is to promote sustainable and inclusive development and regional connectivity in the Asian and Pacific region.

ESCAP's role as a regional development arm of the United Nations Secretariat is to support its membership with policy oriented research and analysis, normative support and technical assistance and capacity building, to respond to the development priorities and changing needs of the Asian and Pacific region.

Communications and Knowledge Management Section provides media, web and knowledge services, helping disseminate key messages and support progress towards meeting the 2030 Agenda in the region.

The Library ensures that ESCAP staff have the data and research tools they need in order to provide reliable and relevant guidance to the region and provides access to its knowledge products via a variety of digital initiatives.

This position is located in the Communications and Knowledge Management Section. The Section reports to the Principal Officer, Office of the Executive Secretary. The incumbent reports to the Public Information Officer.

Responsibilities

Under the direct supervision of the Public Information Officer, and overall supervision of the Chief of Communications and Knowledge Management Section, the incumbent is required to perform the following functions:

  • Participates in initial meetings with clients to discuss potential design projects, e.g. substantive content, communication objectives, media (including electronically published products) and design options, technical specifications, costs, schedules/deadlines, etc.
  • Independently undertakes design assignments, including high priority requests, for a variety of UN-sponsored activities (e.g. major conferences, observances, events and campaigns, etc.); conceptualizes and develops design proposals for review by clients, which may include photographic, illustrative or more abstract graphic solutions.
  • Prepares all approved designs which may include audiovisual and multimedia products (e.q. infographics, social media packages, PowerPoint templates, brochures, publication covers, organization's branding, campaign templates and other graphic products etc.) in electronic format for final review and printing; reviews color and print proofs as required.
  • Assists with the collection and analysis of data as well as preparation of data presentations and reports for information sharing, responding to queries, knowledge management, planning and decision making.
  • Assists with visualizations and updating information material such as web pages or brochures.
  • Provides guidance and support throughout the project production process; coordinates and follows-up with clients and other relevant parties (e.g. copy and proofreaders, production staff, library and cartography staff, etc.) and ensures that project in on schedule.
  • Performs other related work as required.
Competencies

Professionalism:
Knowledge of standard industry production and printing processes, including desktop publishing, design and layout. Knowledge of internal UN printing practices and operations. Knowledge of photography, page layout and photograph sizing. Good graphic art skills and demonstrated ability to independently develop creative designs and produce high-quality graphic material for varied print media projects (e.g. posters, brochures, press kits, book covers, book designs, etc.).

Ability to handle multiple design projects simultaneously, including coordinating work of the Section as well as that of consultants/contractors across the organization.

Shows pride in work and in achievements; demonstrates professional competence and mastery of subject matter; is conscientious and efficient in meeting commitments, observing deadlines and achieving results; is motivated by professional rather than personal concerns; shows persistence when faced with difficult problems or challenges; remains calm in stressful situations.

Education

High school diploma or equivalent is required. A first-level university degree may be accepted in lieu of two years of required experience.

Job - Specific Qualification


A relevant first-level university degree in arts, fine arts, graphic design, digital media, communications, public information or related area, is desirable.

Work Experience


A minimum of seven years (or five years if graduated with a first-level university degree) of progressively responsible experience in publications production and/or creative graphic design, including desktop publishing, branding/advertising, layout, or related area is required.

Experience in coordinating, guiding, and giving feedback of the work of external contractors/consultants across the organization is desirable.

Experience in using graphic design software and tools such as Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, Premiere Pro) and Canva is desirable.

Experience in the United Nations Common System or international organization similar to UN Common System is desirable.

Languages

English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the post advertised, fluency in English is required. Knowledge of another UN official language is an advantage.
