Position / Job Specification: Learning Mentor

Responsibilities:

The Learning Mentor will

  • maintain a caseload and facilitate student's learning and development through mentoring by identifying learning and development needs, planning for how these needs will be addressed through mentoring and reviewing the effectiveness of mentoring;
  • contribute to the identification of barriers to learning for individual students and provide them with a range of strategies for overcoming the barriers;
  • support students in developing self-regulation by embedding the Zones of Regulation framework, helping them to recognise and manage their emotions, make positive behaviour choices, and strengthen relationships with peers and adults
  • work collaboratively with class teachers to develop, agree, and implement time-bound action plans for groups and individual students, informed by a clear assessment of their strengths and needs. Support delivery through adapted teaching and differentiation where required, and maintain accurate records of progress for each identified student;·

  • provide in-class support to identified student's, ensuring they can access learning alongside their peers and apply agreed strategies in real time;
  • work collaboratively with class teachers to model and reinforce positive learning behaviours and to address barriers to learning within the classroom environment;
  • promote the development of the Characteristics of Effective Learning (such as resilience, independence, curiosity, and collaboration) through targeted support and classroom strategies;
  • work in partnership with class teachers to adapt tasks, resources, and approaches so that pupils can engage fully and make progress;
  • maintain a working understanding of the English National Curriculum in order to align support strategies with age-related expectations and subject-specific learning goals;
  • develop and maintain appropriate contact with the families and carers of students who have identified needs and to keep them informed about the pupil's needs and progress, and to secure positive family support for the student;
  • ensure the playground environment includes quiet, inclusive spaces that promote wellbeing and allow all students to feel safe, regulated, and supported during unstructured times;· contribute to the training and guidance of Playground Leaders and Peer Mentors so they can model positive behaviour, inclusion, and supportive play;
  • maintain a working knowledge of Restorative Approaches to Conflict Resolution and apply these to help students build empathy, repair relationships, and resolve disagreements constructively;
  • act as a point of contact for accessing specialist support and to build up a detailed knowledge of support available;
  • operate within agreed legal, ethical and professional boundaries when working with student's those involved with them;
  • meet regularly with the designated line manager to report on progress of identified pupils and to review own contribution to the school;
  • liaise closely with the staff in school to ensure that everyone understands and supports the strategies being used by the Learning Mentor to develop the students' skills for learning and learning behaviours;
  • work closely with the school counsellor and the Well-being teach
  • maintain the Assessment & Inclusion Team Dashboard for Wellbeing;
  • attend training and professional development sessions;
  • undertake other duties, appropriate to the post, as may be required from time to time.

Professional Expectations:

The Learning Mentor should have the following qualities

  • ability to facilitate student's learning and development through mentoring, promoting and maximising educational opportunities and achievements;
  • ability to maintain a personal caseload and obtain and verify information about student's educational achievements and needs;
  • ability to provide a good role model to students and a commitment to helping students achieve their potential;
  • knowledge and understanding of child protection and health and safety practices and procedures;
  • ability to evaluate the risk of abuse, and assess the need for intervention;
  • good listening skills and the ability to communicate effectively (verbally, in writing and electronically), with children and young people, families, school staff and a range of other professionals;
  • knowledge and awareness of issues and factors related to underachievement and barriers to learning and participation;
  • ability to exercise initiative, work independently and with individuals, institutions and organisations and take responsibility for the delivery of a programme;
  • ability to work flexibly;
  • excellent interpersonal and communication skills both in working relationship with students and in forming effective relationships with a wide range of professionals;
  • excellent organisational and time-management skills;
  • knowledge and experience of working with a wide range of support agencies and services and the ability to develop and sustain arrangements for joint working;
  • sound ICT skills and the ability to use ICT for administration and learning.

Qualification and Training:

  • A good level of literacy and numeracy skills;
  • Evidence of relevant and recent professional development.

Experience:

  • A minimum of three years experience of working with children, either in a paid or voluntary capacity (as a teacher or Play/Youth worker, for example);
  • A minimum of one year's experience of effective working with students in an educational setting.
