Packaging Engineer, Paper and Flexible

Main purpose of the role:

• The Packaging Engineer specializes in the design, development, and commercialization of primary, secondary, and tertiary packaging solutions, with a focus on paperboard, corrugated materials, and flexible films/laminates. This role drives innovation, cost-efficiency, and sustainability while ensuring all packaging meets performance, quality, and regulatory requirements.

Key Accountabilities:

1. Packaging Development & Design:

• Lead the design and development of innovative packaging solutions using materials such as paperboard, corrugated fiberboard, films, foils, and multi-layer laminates (flexible packaging).
• Utilize CAD software (e.g., ArtiosCAD, SolidWorks) to create detailed 2D drawings and 3D models for component fabrication and assembly.
• Determine appropriate packaging structures and material combinations based on product requirements, shelf life, barrier properties, and transportation needs.

2. Testing, Validation, and Specification:

• Develop and execute comprehensive performance testing protocols (e.g., integrity, distribution, thermal, shelf life) to validate packaging designs against industry standards (e.g., ISTA, ASTM).
• Create and manage robust packaging specifications, Bill of Materials (BOMs), and technical documentation for materials, finished goods, and palletizations.
• Support manufacturing sites during production trials, ensuring new packaging systems run efficiently on automated filling and sealing machinery (e.g., Form-Fill-Seal, bagging).

3. Cost Optimization & Sustainability:

• Lead initiatives for cost reduction and efficiency improvement related to packaging materials and processes.
• Drive the transition to more sustainable packaging, including evaluating recyclable, compostable, and bio-based coatings and materials.
• Identify and evaluate new raw materials, coatings, and converting technologies (e.g., extrusion coating, lamination, printing) to enhance packaging performance.

4. Cross-functional Collaboration:

• Act as the subject matter expert (SME) on packaging, collaborating closely with R&D, Marketing, Procurement, Quality, and Manufacturing teams to align packaging with product specifications and business goals.
• Ensure all designs are compliant with internal quality standards, regulatory requirements (e.g., food safety, FDA), and local environmental laws.

Qualifications:

• Bachelor's Degree in Packaging Engineering, Materials Science, Chemical Engineering, or a closely related technical field (e.g., Polymer Engineering).
• Minimum of 3+ years of professional experience in packaging development, preferably within the Consumer Goods (FMCG) or Food/Beverage industry. Specialized Experience: Proven experience with both paper-based substrates (e.g., cartons, corrugated) and flexible film packaging.

Technical Skills:

• Materials Expertise: Deep technical understanding of polymer science, paper substrates, coatings, barrier technologies, and converting processes (e.g., lamination, printing) specific to flexible packaging.
• CAD/Design: Proficiency in CAD software (e.g., ArtiosCAD, SolidWorks) and packaging design principles.
• Testing Standards: Strong knowledge of packaging testing methods and standards (e.g., ISO, ASTM) and the ability to formulate and execute complex experimental designs.
• Machinery: Familiarity with automated packaging machinery and processes used for forming, filling, and sealing flexible and paper products.

Preferred Qualifications

• Advanced degree in a related engineering or science field.
• Knowledge of Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) or food safety regulations.
• Experience with Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) or SAP systems.

Working location: at Samut Sakhon plant, 5-6 kms away from Central Mahachai

Working conditions: Onsite (Mon-Fri and alternative Sat)
