**Main purpose of job**:
The British Embassy Bangkok is a large diplomatic mission of around 140 staff delivering a dynamic and rapidly expanding programme of activity in support of the UK’s objectives including on prosperity, trade, security, open societies, consular services and law enforcement. This is an exciting opportunity to join our diverse team.

This exciting new role at the heart of British Embassy Bangkok’s Political Section will help to support the delivery of UK foreign and security policy objectives in Thailand. The job holder will research and analyse key foreign and security policy issues, provide reporting on foreign policy issues relevant to the work of the Embassy in Thailand, and use their existing network of contacts to support and inform their work. The job holder will also be responsible for wider policy and team support, and maintain a degree of flexibility in order to support on cross-cutting issues from time to time.

**Roles and responsibilities / what will the jobholder be expected to achieve?**:
**Foreign & Security Policy (FSP) (70%)**

**_ Policy Advice_**
- Provide substantive input into Embassy discussions on FSP issues.

**_ Research and analysis_**

The jobholder will use their strategic awareness, and understanding of global and regional geopolitics and of Thailand’s foreign policy approach, to:

- Undertake research in order to provide insight and analysis on FSP issues, which supports the work of the Embassy’s senior political officers.
- Provide a Thai perspective on thematic FSP issues which help to inform and support political teams FSP objectives in Thailand and the wider SE Asia region.
- Work closely with Embassy economists to incorporate economic insights and analysis

**_ Monitoring and reporting_**
- Media monitoring and identifying trends on key FSP issues.
- Providing high quality briefing and reporting on FSP issues affecting Thailand, incorporating your analysis on possible implications for UK policy and objectives.

**_ Building and maintaining relationships_**
- Build and maintain your network of foreign policy contacts to inform research, analysis and policy making.
- Use your network to support the Embassy’s work, including but not limited to: setting up meetings between BE Bangkok officials and key interlocutors, informing reporting and analysis.
- Occasionally act as interpreter at high level meetings.
Wider policy and team support (15%)
- Providing ad hoc policy support to colleagues in Political Section and across the Embassy, including drafting FSP briefing and supporting on FSP-focussed visits.
- The nature of working in Political Section means that priorities and areas of focus can change at short notice. Occasionally, the jobholder will be expected to support the wider Political Section by taking on new work or tasks not outlined above.

**_ Executive support to Regional China Network Co-ordinator (10%)_**
- Provide executive support to the Regional China Network Co-ordinator, including arranging engagements and events in Bangkok, setting up meetings for the regional network, and making logístical arrangements for regional travel.

**_ Corporate (5%)_**
- The jobholder will be expected to contribute proactively, fully and constructively to the Embassy’s corporate agenda, for example through joining an Embassy Committee.
- All members of staff undergo crisis management and response training, and should be ready to fulfil a crisis role as required.

**Other**

In times of peak operation demand, work flexibly within the Section and within the Embassy

All staff will be expected to make a corporate contribution to the smooth running of the British Embassy, either through a committee membership or another voluntary role.

Essential qualifications, skills and experience 1
- At least 2 years’ professional experience in a field closely linked to foreign or security policy; an established range of contacts in these fields.
- Strong interest in geopolitical issues affecting Thailand and wider South East Asia.
- Strong knowledge and understanding of the current global geopolitical context, including key thematic issues affecting Thailand, e.g. economic security, cyber security, Mekong sub region and relations with China, conflict in Myanmar.
- Good knowledge of Thai politics, political system and current affairs.
- Ability to gather, analyse, summarise and present information clearly and concisely in a range of formats to both an internal and external audience.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills, with a proven track record of effective communication. Strong interpersonal and networking skills.
- Attention to detail with a proven track record of delivering results, in a timely manner and to a high standard.
- Ability to make own decisions and to work with limited supervision.
