1. Lifeguarding & pool supervision
• Maintain constant poolside surveillance of all users, applying the Ellis 10/20 protection standard: scan the whole zone within 10 seconds and reach any swimmer within 20.
• Act solely as lifeguard when on duty; the lifeguard role is never combined with teaching or coaching.
• Enforce pool rules and safe behaviour, and control access and swimmer numbers to the agreed supervision ratios.
• Perform rescues and administer first aid, CPR and AED as required, leading the pool Emergency Action Plan.
• Ensure at least two qualified adults are on poolside whenever the pool is in use, and that under-18s are never counted as safety cover.
• Check that all rescue equipment (reach pole, throw bag, torpedo buoy, spinal board, first-aid kit and AED) is present, serviceable and in position before every session. 2. Pool water quality & plant
• Test chlorine and pH levels daily, record the readings and report them.
• Add chemicals correctly and in the agreed quantities when needed, ensuring they are fully dispersed and the water is safe before the pool is used.
• Carry out daily cleanliness checks of the pool and surrounding area, including pump baskets and filters, and report anything requiring the maintenance team.
• Confirm the pool floor is clearly visible and readings are within range before any session begins; close the pool if either is not met. 3. Opening, closing & equipment
• Open and close the pool and the water-play equipment each day.
• Check that all equipment, surfaces and plant are safe and in working order before and after use, and log any defects for the maintenance team. 4. Safeguarding & compliance
• Uphold the school's safeguarding and child-protection policy at all times; no phones or cameras on poolside.
• Follow the pool Normal Operating Procedure (NOP), the Emergency Action Plan (EAP) and the school's risk assessments.
• Operate to the recognised aquatic standards adopted by LANNA (Swim England / ASA, STA and Ellis & Associates).
• Keep accurate daily records (water tests, checks and incidents) and report to the Athletics Director. 5. General
• Provide qualified lifeguard cover for swimming lessons, academy sessions and galas as timetabled.
• Keep all qualifications current and take part in training and emergency drills.
• Undertake other reasonable duties appropriate to the role, as directed by the Athletics Director.
