Job Summary:

The Magazine Art Director is responsible for the visual style and layout of the magazine, overseeing the overall design and ensuring that visual storytelling aligns with the magazine's editorial vision, brand identity, and audience expectations. This role involves collaboration with editors, photographers, illustrators, and production teams to deliver compelling, cohesive, and innovative design across all print and digital platforms.

Key Responsibilities:

Lead the design and layout of all magazine issues from concept to final production

Develop and maintain the magazine's visual identity, ensuring consistency in typography, color palettes, and overall design language

Collaborate closely with editorial staff to conceptualize visual treatments that enhance written content

Commission and direct photographers, illustrators, graphic motion and freelance designers

Oversee photo shoots and ensure high-quality visual assets

Create and manage design templates, style guides, and asset libraries

Supervise the design team, providing feedback, guidance, and creative direction

Ensure all design work meets print production specifications and digital publishing standards

Manage multiple deadlines and deliverables in a fast-paced editorial calendar

Stay informed of design trends, competitor publications, and emerging technologies

Required Qualifications:

Bachelor's degree in Graphic Design, Visual Communications, or a related field

5+ years of experience in editorial or publication design, with at least 2 years in a leadership role

Proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite (InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator)

Strong understanding of typography, layout, color theory, and print production

Excellent project management and communication skills

Portfolio demonstrating creative, high-quality editorial design work

Preferred Qualifications:

Experience with digital publishing platforms and multimedia content

Knowledge of UX/UI principles for digital magazine layouts

Familiarity with photography direction and image editing

Experience working in fashion, lifestyle, news, or niche-interest publications
