Duties and Responsibilities
The Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP) is the most inclusive intergovernmental platform in the Asia-Pacific region. The United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific is the main legislative organ of ESCAP and reports to the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC). The Commission promotes cooperation among its 53 member States and 9 associate members in pursuit of solutions to sustainable development challenges. ESCAP is one of the five regional commissions of the United Nations. The Office of the Executive Secretary (OES) provides guidance to divisions, subregional offices and regional institutes on the implementation of the ESCAP programme of work and on ensuring its accountability. It also provides direction on the mainstreaming of policies and strategies relating to gender equality and the empowerment of women, as well as on disability inclusion, across the programme of work and to programme support units. The internship/s are UNPAID and full-time for the duration of 3-6 months. Interns work five days per week (37.5 hours). The incumbent/s are under the direct supervision of the Sustainable Development Officer and/or Secretary of Commission, OES. Responsibilities: Knowledge management:
- Assist in the organization of substantive materials related to the work of ESCAP in support of the Deputy Executive Secretary's (DES) engagements
- Assist in the collection and consolidation of information related to the development and outcomes of global and regional intergovernmental dialogues
- Provide assistance in the design and development of products in support of ESCAP's high level engagement
- Support development of meeting notes and background materials related to engagements by the DES
- Assist in developing related data work and analytical knowledge products to support the delivery of training, learning events and other capacity development initiatives
- Provide support in updating the websites with relevant material Coordination:
- Support for the coordination of missions by the DES
- Provide logistical support to meetings and events, including preparatory meetings for the Asia-Pacific Forum on Sustainable Development
- Support the coordination of inter-divisional or inter-agency meetings
- Support inter-agency coordination activities as part of the secretariat of the Regional Collaborative Platform for the Asia-Pacific region
- Support the OES's advocacy and communications work, including liaising with communications teams and partners, designing outreach material and collecting and using images, sound bites, quotes and other media products
- Support development and coordination of reviews of regional implementation of SDGs with a specific focus on SDGs 3, 5, 8, 14 and 17
- Other coordination support as deemed appropriate by the supervisor Research support:
- Provide research support for background/information materials in support of high-level engagements by the DES and ES
- Provide research support to the preparation of speaking engagements by DES
- Assist in background and preliminary research for the Asia-Pacific Forum on Sustainable Development
- Evaluation of meetings and projects and compiling statistics
- Other research support as deemed appropriate by the supervisor.
- Support the team in their day-to-day activities and other duties, as required.
Qualifications/special Skills
To qualify for an internship with the United Nations Internship Programme, applicants must meet one of the following requirements: a) be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); or b) be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum Bachelor's level or equivalent); or c) have graduated with a university degree (as defined above) and, if selected, must commence the internship within a one year period of graduation.
Languages
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. Fluency in spoken and written English is required for the internship. Knowledge of an additional official UN language is an asset. Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian and Spanish are the official languages of the United Nations Secretariat.
