As a truly inclusive International School, the population of St Andrews school is made up of children with a wide range of needs. Some children in the Early Years and Primary School have limited English language exposure and, therefore, need support to access the UK curriculum. The role of the Learning Support teacher is to assess children’s areas of need and develop programmes that meet those needs. The Learning Support teacher plans lessons along with and in parallel to class teachers that reinforce the children’s in-class learning. This provision helps these students to access the curriculum and allows them to participate more in their education. The Learning Support teacher will be a specialist within the wider learning support team. Reporting to Director of Whole School Learning Support and Key Stage 2 Learning Support Coordinator Purpose of the post: - To work in conjunction with the KS2 Learning Support Coordinator to ensure all children on the Learning Support register have appropriate provision. - To deliver lessons that are responsive to the needs of students with a range of learning challenges, such as ADHD, Dyslexia and Dysgraphia. - Report to relevant Learning Support Coordinator, Director of Whole School Learning Support and Heads of Phase General Responsibilities: - To employ appropriate teaching methods to facilitate learning in accordance with the age, stage, aptitude and ability of the children in your care. To keep up-to-date with current educational practices and theory. - To implement the school’s assessment and reporting procedures. - To participate in and deliver professional development sessions - To maintain record-keeping procedures in keeping with school policies and good Educational Practice. These should be relevant to the age of your students. - To make the school a welcoming and stimulating environment that will encourage children to actively participate in all that is required of them. - To meet with parents to discuss the children’s progress and to provide the parents with written reports in accordance with school policy. - Lead a small team of Learning Support Assistants to ensure that the student’s learning needs are met and they are able to access the curriculum as fully as possible - To be an ambassador for the school in the wider local and global community. The whole school community and environment: - To make the school a welcoming and stimulating environment that will encourage children to actively participate in all that is required of them. - To educate the children so that they become lively thinking and responsive individuals by providing differentiated experiences in all areas of the curriculum. - To participate in extracurricular activities once a week. - To support promotional activities associated with the advancement of the School. - To be an ambassador for the School in the wider local and global community. - To promote the House system within the school and organise one House activity per year. The following additional responsibilities apply: - Help to observe and assess children that have been referred to the learning support team by class teachers. - Plan, organise and implement teaching programs that support children’s areas of need during in-class support, Literacy or Maths support, small group or one-to-one withdrawal sessions. - Attend planning meetings in person (or if not possible, meet separately) to feedback to class teachers to keep them up to date with children’s progress - To liaise effectively between parents and class teachers, ensuring that all parties know and understand the targets set for their children. - Preparing (in conjunction with specialists and class teacher), implementing, monitoring and reviewing IEPs and therefore student progress. - Act as a key worker for children assigned by the KS2 Learning Support Coordinator All teachers are also expected to contribute positively to the extra-curricular programme, which runs after school, offering an extracurricular activity that either supports or extends the students’ learning, or from another area of interest.
