String Ensemble Conductor

**Type of Contract**: Service Agreement
**Job Summary**:
Several students play orchestral string instruments at NIST. The String Ensemble provides them with the opportunity to play together, and perform in concerts, festivals, and other trips as arranged by the String Ensemble Conductor and with the prior approval of the Secondary Music Team Leader. Rehearsals are for approximately 3 hours per week in the afternoon, and are currently split evenly between Monday and Thursday from 15:30 until 17:00. Occasional evening or weekend rehearsals and performances are also required as needed. Occasional recruitment events may also be required at key points during the year to sustain the ensemble and increase enrollment.
**Responsibilities**:
Conduct, and develop the following ensemble for the duration of the school year:
NIST String Ensemble: 3 hours per week
**Other responsibilities**:
- Maintain order and cleanliness of instruments/equipment in rehearsal room
- Instill responsibility for the care of equipment (E.G. instruments, sheet music, music stands) in our students
- Plan and coordinate with Secondary Music team leader in preparation for concerts, trips, and festivals throughout the school year
- Coordinate with A/V coordinator to manage logistics for instruments and other equipment for performances and other school events.
- Inspect music equipment and report to A/V coordinator to arrange for repairs as needed
- Keep attendance records of students at rehearsals and maintain contact with parents with regards to absences and student preparation for concerts.
**Additional Job Description in relation to Child Safeguarding**:
- Be familiar with the child safeguarding policy
- Be aware of abuse risks to children
- Abide by the Code of Conduct
- Report safeguarding concerns promptly (mandatory duty)
- Actively seek opportunities to improve operational practices and discuss these ideas with the Secondary Music Team Leader
**Qualifications**:
- Bachelor’s degree in Music with a specialty in Strings
- Teaching Experience will be an advantage
- Experience conducting in an educational setting
- Able to communicate in written and spoken English.
- A musical background or be highly enthusiastic about music.
- Demonstrated good rapport with teenage students.
- The ability to work within strict time deadlines.
- Display initiative and the ability to work on your own.
- Available between the hours of 3pm and 5pm weekdays.
- Availability to work occasional nights / weekends when required.
- Good attitude and service-minded
- Available to begin work in March, and throughout the school year
