Responsibilities and Duties
The primary role of the Field Instructor is to prepare and facilitate Expedition Field Courses for university students. Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
- Develop the syllabus, assist with seminars and grade papers and assignments.
- Facilitate student academic learning in and outside the classroom. Collaborate with professors and local instructors on the field to meet the program objectives.
- Facilitate students’ cross-cultural adjustment and engagement with host families.
- Assist with interpretation and translation between students and locals when necessary.
- Prepare and plan course logistics such as but not limited to academic activities, schedules, transportation, budgets, and speakers.
- Organize and manage essential materials for field course learning, i.e. expedition gear, medical supplies, course books and readings.
- Care for student medical needs and make well-informed decisions while on field course.
- Oversee and create a positive learning environment for student groups on field courses and at ISDSI.
- Set an example for students and encourage them to overcome physical challenges, such as hiking, sea kayaking, living in hot conditions, etc.
- Work with ISDSI staff to strengthen our curriculum development and teaching related to sustainability and environmental topics.
- Develop and coordinate special projects as needed (short term groups, gap year, school groups).
Work Environment
- Resilient to work extended hours during field studies (up to 3 weeks in the field at a time)
- Work in the office when not in the field (9am-5pm)
- Sometimes work holidays if programs are in session

Strong leadership and team-oriented mindset
Excellent interpersonal and cross-cultural communication skills in English and Thai
The Foundation For Experiential Learning (Thailand) is host to the International Sustainable Development Studies (ISDSI). ISDSI is a Chiang Mai-based study abroad program for American university students.
