Security Sergeant

The Department of Safety and Security is responsible for providing leadership, operational support and oversight of the security management system, ensure the maximum security for staff and eligible dependents as well as enable the safest and most efficient conduct of the programmes and activities of the United Nations system.

This position is located in the Security and Safety Section, Bangkok, in the Department of Safety and Security. The incumbent reports to the Security Lieutenant.

**Responsibilities**:
Under the direct supervision of the Security Lieutenant, and overall supervision of the Chief of Security and Safety Section, the incumbent is required to perform armed security functions and the following functions:

- Conducts daily briefings and assign officers to various functions or posts.
- Supervises staff and carries out inspections to ensure that officers on duty are discharging their functions appropriately.
- Examines routine reports prepared by subordinates and certify their accuracy.
- Makes recommendations to the supervising officer on operational matters.
- Briefs officers under command of possible security threats and related operational plans.
- Assumes control of specific areas as assigned during periods of heightened security.
- Counsels, coaches and mentors officers under command.
- Provides input for the performance evaluation of security personnel under command.
- Prepares written reports of all unusual incidents.
- Makes recommendations on basic security operation.
- Performs all other related duties as required.

Education
High school diploma or equivalent is required.

Job - Specific Qualification
Additional security or military training is required.

Work Experience
A minimum of five years of progressively responsible experience in the security operation which includes investigation, physical security, personal protection, operational planning, fire prevention and suppression, emergency medical and hazardous material response, video imaging badge systems and methods of instruction or related area is required.

A minimum of five years of experience in supervising security personnel in the United Nations Security Management System is desirable.

Experience in shift system and time management system in the security operations in the United Nations Common System or international organizations is desirable.

Experience in staff regulations and rules in the United Nations Common System or international organizations is desirable.

Languages
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the post advertised, fluency in English is required. Knowledge of another UN official language is an advantage.

Assessment
Qualified applicants may be evaluated through a competency-based interview and/or other assessment methods.

Special Notice

Must have passed the United Nations Global General Service Test (GGST) at Headquarters or an equivalent locally-administered test at Offices Away from Headquarters.

Must have passed the United Nations Security Officer Test (SOT).

Normally the Security Sergeant will be required to perform duties in UN Security uniform and, at times, in civilian clothes. The Security Sergeant must be physically and mentally fit. Duties may require long periods of standing. The Security Sergeant is required to obtain and maintain appropriate host country licenses, including, but not limited to, pistol and vehicle operator licenses.
